An interesting provincial style seal
Lot 4015
Leon, ek prosopou, 10th century. Seal (Lead, 28 mm, 13.62 g). Patriarchal cross with floral ornaments springing from base; the lower cross bar has a St. Andrew's cross at the intersection and two more crosses at the end of the extremities. Rev. ΛЄⲰ/N ЄK / ACOΠ retrograde, in three lines. Unpublished in the standard references. An impressive and very well preserved seal of charming "provincial" workmanship. Good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The title of ek prosopou means "representative", indicating Leon served as a deputy to a holder of high office. Judging from the crude style of engraving, he likely served as strategos in the border provinces, rather than as an aristocrat in the Capital
